Aamti
Aamti is the Marathi term used for spicy, sweet and sour dal. It could be mild or medium or extra spicy. My recipe is for the mild spicy dal.
Serves: 2 to 3
Ingredients
- Toor dal – 3 to 4 tbsp
- Tomato (chopped) – 1 small (optional)
- Coconut (scrapped) – 1 tbsp
- Jaggery (grated) – 1 tbsp approx
- Tamarind pulp – 1 1/2 tbsp
- Goda masala – 3/4 tsp
- Hing – 1/8 tsp + 1/8 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp + 1/8 tsp
- Green chillies (slit) – 2
- Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves – 5 to 6
- Oil – 2 tsp
- Corriander leaves (chopped) – for garnishing
- Salt to taste
Procedure
- Wash toor dal and pressure cook it with 1/8 tsp of hing and 1/8 tsp turmeric powder by adding sufficient water.
- Heat oil in thick bottomed pan.
- Add mustard and let the splutter, put off the flame.
- Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, green chillies, remaining hing, remaining turmeric powder, goda masala, tomato and coconut. Put on the flame and stir fry for 5 seconds.
- Add cooked dal, jaggery, tamarind pulp and salt. Add water if required and stir well.
- Simmer for 3 to 5 min.
- Serve hot with steamed rice.
