Kaalaylle Fov (कालयल्ले फॉव)
Kaalaylle Fov is a Goan traditional sweet snack. ‘Kaalovap’ is mixing and ‘Fov’ means poha (flattened rice). It is usually prepared for Diwali, but can be prepared even otherwise for breakfast. Soaked poha is mixed with coconut and jaggery or sugar mixture and flavoured with cardamom. There is one more variant of the same, in which chopped green chillies and coriander are added to the coconut; and sugar is added only for taste. When it is prepared for Diwali, red organic poha is used. Regular poha can also be used.
I have shared the recipe for poha with jaggery and here it goes.
Measurement: 1Cup = 180 ml
Serves: 3
Ingredients
- Poha – 2 cups
- Coconut (scrapped) – 1 cup or as per your requirement
- Jaggery (grated) – 1/3 to 1/2 cup
- Salt – 1/2 tsp
- Cardamom (powdered) – 2
Procedure
- Wash and drain poha. Keep aside for 5 min.
- Sprinkle salt over poha.
- Combine coconut and jaggery in a mixing bowl. (Add 2 tsp of water, so that jaggery will melt easily.)
- Now, add poha and cardamom powder to the mixture and mix thoroughly.
- Serve.
Tip
Instead of jaggery, sugar can be used. If you are using sugar, then use a lesser quantity of it; may be you could take 1/4 cup of sugar and add more if required.
When this dish is prepared for Diwali, this quantity should be sufficient for 5 to 6 people because there are variety of poha dishes prepared.
